The magical communities buzzed after the attack in London. Amanda’s people worked overtime searching for the couple who’d walked away from the attack, and Karam’s people worked overtime parsing the small bits of information the few remaining attackers gave. They all agreed on one thing. The Kingdom was growing stronger.

But they were good at hiding, and without another attack or more information, the TIS and the TCO hit a wall.

Months passed without another major attack, but the specter of the Kingdom was always there. As was the knowledge that one day, Karam would be forced to confront his destiny. But in the meantime, they lived, and loved, and protected the world from evil as best they could. Not having to hide his true self from his wife made Karam’s life both easier and harder. They didn’t speak of his commitment to the Guardians, but his wife was an Adept, and so was he, and their teams were able to work together and keep the world safer. They trained together, challenged one another, and he was astounded daily by her abilities. Seeing his powerful wife in action made him love her even more.

Every time a terror organization went dormant, it was a concern—they could have disbanded, or they could be in recruitment, training, and growth mode, plotting their next attack. The Kingdom was excellent at staying off the radar. There were terror attacks by nonmagical groups, terrible ones, and others thwarted by their individual magical organizations. But the Kingdom had disappeared.

Five years after the attack, just when things seemed on an even keel, Amanda asked Karam to meet her for dinner. They had a special place they loved near their flat, and he was more than happy to spend an evening there with his wife. Until she arrived, looking distracted.

She kissed him on the cheek and ordered a glass of Sauvignon Blanc. He had his usual old-fashioned. The tension was humming between them as they waited for their order, enough that Karam finally said, “Out with it. You clearly have something on your mind. Just tell me.”

She sighed. “The TCO promoted me.”

Karam’s eyebrows lifted. “Oh? That’s wonderful, darling. And overdue, if you ask me. What’s the position?”

“Director of the TCO.”

It took him a moment. “That’s in Langley.”

She nodded, misery swamping her eyes. “I can say no. I don’t have to—”

He smiled widely. “Yes, you do. You must. You’ve worked too hard to achieve this, Amanda. When do they want you in Virginia?”

“Two weeks.”

He squeezed her hand. “It shouldn’t be hard to get a transfer. I’ll put in the request in the morning.”

Amanda’s expression brightened so much that Karam realized she’d been holding back. She wasn’t just excited; she was ecstatic. Overjoyed. Thrilled at the prospect of leading her organization. There was no way he would hold her back. He would miss London, but he would go to Virginia with her without complaint.

“I am so proud of you, my love.” He reached forward to take her hand and felt a twinge in his chest.
